...an utter disaster

While I was in DC for ASACC I was in charge of the service learning project before the conference began. I had come up with a great project helping the Anacostia Watershed Society clean up Fort DuPont park. It had been fairly easy to get the plans set up and the AWS had all the details worked out, all the equipment was provided we just needed to get ourselves there... this ended up being the death of me. The project was the morning of St. Patrick's Day, this being the day that DC holds not 1 but 3 races. With the DC Rock & Roll Marathon running past our hotel and closing the nearest metro station to Fort DuPont park. After a run through friday afternoon that included one long train ride, a mile walk through a fairly sketchy neighborhood and a down pour we decided to get a bus to transport the students. This being said on the morning of the project the bus couldn't get to us and happened to be over an hour late. After all was said and done the actual project ended up being a success, we were slightly ate and irritated upon arrival but it was a beautiful day and we saved about 70 trees in the park.
